For the word of God is living and active. (Heb 4:12a, NIV)

At one of our gatherings, I took a long look round the table. We were from the same mission school and Scripture was one of the subjects that many of us sat for both for the Lower Secondary Examination as well as for the Senior Cambridge. During one of our discussions, the subject of Christianity cropped up. A handful of them commented drily that they had even obtained distinctions for the subject. “So what? It did nothing to convert us. That was ten years ago.

Ten years later, we met again for a similar gathering. Most of the married ones were already in the empty nest phase. Some marriages had broken up. Others were already retired.

And what do you know? Some of the more antagonistic ones had become believers! God does work in mysterious ways. We had learned Scripture for exam sake. It held no power because faith was absent. But once faith enters, the word of God becomes living and active, sharper than a doubled edged sword, able to discern between truth and lies.

Dear Lord Jesus
You have said the harvest is ready but the laborers are few.
May you raise up believers to respond to your call
to preach the Good News
for as the Apostle Paul says:
how can they believe unless they hear
and how can they hear unless it is preached to them?’ (paraphrased)
In Jesus’ most precious Name
Amen
